Darren Fletcher expressed his frustration after Manchester United's Under-18 side lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final. The former United midfielder, now a coach, criticised City for announcing individual coaches during the trophy presentation and expressed disappointment with the Football Association for allowing the final to be held at the Joie Stadium instead of a main venue.
Fletcher's Post-Match Outburst
Speaking after the match, Fletcher said: "Not only to watch a team lift a trophy, but to be a Man City parade when it's an FA Youth Cup final. I've never heard individual coaches be shouted out, every individual player be shouted out. That doesn't happen in cup finals. So I'm disappointed in the FA for everything that's gone around this game, for the location, for everything. And then our players having to deal with that."
He added: "But as you say, it's disappointing. You have to stand there. You have to respect the opposition. But not when Man City take over an FA Youth Cup. It's an FA competition. It should never have been like that. But that's my one gripe for tonight. But the best team won, compliments to them."
Venue Controversy
The choice of venue was a contentious issue. Traditionally, Youth Cup finals are held at a club's main stadium, but City could not use the Etihad due to construction work for their remaining Premier League home fixtures. United offered Old Trafford as an alternative, but City declined. The FA granted City special dispensation to use the Joie Stadium, which has a capacity of 7,000.
Fletcher diplomatically voiced his disappointment before the match but was more direct after the defeat. He questioned whether the FA should have taken more control: "Probably a little bit. If you see the things that have gone on throughout this game, it's a historic competition. So there's been a lot of disappointments in the build-up."
Praise for City's Manager
Despite his frustrations, Fletcher praised City's Under-18 manager: "Man City have got a fantastic manager. He's a great, really nice guy. Dead respectful. Coaches his team the right way. No antics on the sidelines between both of us. So I've got a massive respect for them."
Other Grievances
Fletcher also highlighted scheduling issues, noting that some of his players had to play in an Under-21 match just 48 hours after the final. "We're dealing with a lot of difficult dynamics just now in terms of these youth fixtures, which is disappointing. And hopefully people take a step back now... And there's a lot of learning to be done for the Premier League and for the FA for these historic competitions."
United were allocated 968 tickets for the final, and while City's website called it a "sold-out Joie Stadium crowd," empty seats were visible in several sections. In contrast, 67,000 fans packed Old Trafford when United's U18s beat Nottingham Forest in the 2022 Youth Cup final.
