ECHO photographer Colin Lane captured first-look photos on the opening day, showing fans enjoying the course and practice rounds. The world's best players are arriving in the region to compete for the coveted Claret Jug.

Spectators were seen watching at the seventh green as practice began. Among the attendees were young Hunter, two, from Manchester, and seven-year-old Penelope from Southport, who enjoyed the heatwave sunshine.
