Bruno Fernandes has declared he is "here to serve" Manchester United and expressed hope that Michael Carrick can guide the club back to the top of the Premier League. The Portugal international spoke out after a broad agreement was reached for Carrick to remain as Red Devils boss over the weekend, though the official announcement is still pending.
Carrick's Appointment Nears Completion
According to the Press Association, the wait for a deal to be announced will extend beyond Wednesday, but United sources indicate it is a matter of when, not if, the contract is finalised. Carrick was in London on Tuesday to present Fernandes with the Football Writers' Association Football of the Year award, highlighting their strong rapport.
Fernandes' Record-Breaking Season
The 31-year-old Fernandes equalled the single-season Premier League record of 20 assists during Sunday's 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, where fans chanted Carrick's name. Reflecting on the head coach's potential long-term role, Fernandes said: "I spoke a lot of times about him. I already said many things about how good he could be as a manager in the past, so I think those words are still there."
He added: "Obviously, it's not in my hands deciding who's going to be the next manager. I'm here to serve the club, whether that is a manager that comes in, or if he stays, I will serve them in the same way."
Ambition to Return to the Summit
When asked if Carrick could lead United back to the Premier League summit, the skipper responded: "I hope so, if he stays. I hope he's one that can take us back to the top of the Premier League because this is what all the players want."
United will conclude their 40-game season—their shortest campaign in 111 years—with a trip to Brighton on Sunday. Carrick heads to the south coast having won 11 of his 16 matches in charge since Ruben Amorim's acrimonious departure in January.
