Bruno Fernandes Applauds Michael Carrick's Impact at Manchester United
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly commended interim manager Michael Carrick, describing him as a "great manager" following United's fourth consecutive victory. The praise came after a professional 2-0 Premier League win over ten-man Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday, which saw Fernandes score a late goal to seal the triumph.
Carrick's Impressive Record as United Boss
This latest success takes Michael Carrick's overall managerial record at Manchester United to six wins from seven matches across two spells. Carrick initially took charge for a three-game stint in 2021 and returned in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim's departure. The victory over Tottenham moves United to within three points of third-placed Aston Villa in the Premier League table.
Fernandes revealed that he had expressed confidence in Carrick's managerial potential four years ago, stating: "I was sure Michael could be a great manager – now he is showing it." The Portuguese midfielder highlighted Carrick's approach, noting: "He came in with the right ideas of giving the players the responsibility, but also some freedom to take the responsibility on the pitch."
Transformative Impact at Old Trafford
The arrival of Michael Carrick has significantly lifted the mood at Manchester United. Prior to his appointment, the club was winless in four matches and had secured only one victory in seven games across all competitions. Fernandes attributed Carrick's positive influence to his deep understanding of the club, having won numerous trophies as a player at United.
"Michael has won everything here and he knows what it means to these fans and for the club to win," Fernandes explained. "I think that is something special for this team." The captain emphasized that Carrick's experience helps the squad manage the immense pressure associated with representing such a historic institution.
Match Turning Point: Romero's Red Card
The encounter with Tottenham took a decisive turn when Spurs captain Cristian Romero received a red card for a strong challenge on United midfielder Casemiro. This marked Romero's second sending-off in seven weeks, following his recent public criticism of Tottenham's squad depth.
Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario confirmed that Romero apologised to his teammates after the match, acknowledging that the red card was avoidable. Vicario defended his captain, saying: "He's our captain, he made a mistake, but we know the player he is. He's going to come back for sure stronger."
Tottenham's Struggles Continue
The defeat extends Tottenham's poor run of form, with just two wins in their last sixteen Premier League matches. Vicario admitted this record is "not acceptable for this football club" but pointed to challenging circumstances, including a lengthy injury list and a demanding schedule that has seen him play 36 games already this season.
Despite their domestic struggles, Tottenham have enjoyed a successful Champions League campaign, though Vicario acknowledged the physical toll on outfield players competing every three days. The goalkeeper's comments highlight the broader challenges facing the North London club as they seek to improve their Premier League standing.
