A football supporter from Horsham, West Sussex, is facing online ridicule after trying to sell a Liverpool shirt personalised with the name of defender Marc Guéhi, who never actually played for the club. The shirt, priced at £52.70 on eBay, was purchased when Guéhi was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool last August. The deal, reportedly worth around £35 million, fell through at the last minute.
Guéhi, a 25-year-old England international with 26 caps, instead signed for Manchester City this week on a five-and-a-half-year contract. He had previously played for Crystal Palace, captaining the side to FA Cup victory over City in May. The fan had chosen the number 23 on the shirt, a digit famously worn by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, but no such number had been officially assigned to Guéhi.
The eBay listing describes the purchase as an "accidental purchase" that the seller "forgot to cancel." The listing has attracted a wave of mocking comments, with one user asking, "Is he hoping someone accidentally buys it from him?" Another remarked, "How can you accidentally buy it." Some questioned the choice of number, with one commenter saying, "Was 23 even going to be his number had he joined Liverpool?"
Despite the teasing, the seller remains hopeful of recouping the £52 cost of the shirt. Guéhi, who came through Chelsea's academy before joining Palace in 2021, is expected to make his debut for Manchester City against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. City come into the match after defeats to Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League and Manchester United in the Premier League.
