Falkirk secured a historic 2-0 victory over Celtic, their first win against the Hoops since 2007, leaving manager Martin O'Neill facing serious questions as his side's form continues to slide.
Goals from Ethan Ross and Scott Tanser at the Falkirk Stadium ended Celtic's hopes of extending their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership, where they remain four points clear despite a run of just three wins in 10 games.
Defensive Shambles Exposed
Celtic's defensive frailties were brutally exposed from the opening minutes. Ross capitalised on a poor clearance from Cameron Carter-Vickers to score inside three minutes, while Tanser added a second before the break.
Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain, a former Celtic player, produced a series of fine saves to deny his old side, including efforts from Camilo Duran and substitutes James Forrest and Benjamin Nygren. Celtic were spared a third goal when VAR ruled out a Jamie Murrell effort for handball.
O'Neill Under Fire
O'Neill's position is now under intense scrutiny, with the manager having considered his future during the last international break. The board has faced criticism for over a year, but attention has now turned to the boss.
Despite a difficult summer of recruitment, there is a growing sense that O'Neill is not getting enough from his squad. The manager has insisted there is no dressing room dissent over his tactics, but unrest among supporters is evident.
Selection Confusion
There remains no clarity over O'Neill's best starting line-up or style of play. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first start in two months alongside Callum McGregor, while Kasper Hogh was dropped and Sebastian Tounekti returned to the bench after being frozen out.
Carter-Vickers, usually a reliable presence, endured a difficult afternoon, being beaten for pace by Tanser for the second goal and receiving a rebuke from O'Neill for passing the ball out of play.
Falkirk's Fine Form
John McGlynn's side have now won four consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since the 2007/08 season, following a summer that saw key players such as Calvin Miller and Barney Stewart depart. On-loan Owen Eames and Finley Barbrook have impressed in midfield.
Bain's performance has also sparked calls for him to be included in Sebastian Pocognoli's squad for the upcoming internationals against North Macedonia and Switzerland, with some suggesting he should challenge Angus Gunn for the number one spot.
