FA Publishes Detailed Account of Maguire's Extended Suspension
The Football Association has released its written reasons for extending Harry Maguire's ban, following the defender's red card against Bournemouth last month. Maguire's initial one-match suspension was increased by an additional game after an alleged outburst directed at match officials.
Referee and Fourth Official Reports Detail the Incident
In the 78th minute of the match, referee Stuart Attwell dismissed Maguire for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. After VAR confirmation, Maguire left the pitch but reportedly approached fourth official Matthew Donohue to protest the decision.
Donohue's report states: "Maguire, as he was leaving the field of play, approached me and shouted, 'You're a joke. You're all a f****** joke.' I am reporting the matter to the Football Association for further review."
Maguire's Defense and Teammate's Testimony
Maguire denied specifically insulting officials, claiming he said "it is a f****** joke" about the penalty decision itself. He insisted: "I am certain that I did not call the Fourth Official or any Match Official, a joke or use any other form of insult."
Manchester United teammate Joshua Zirkzee supported this version, stating he recalled Maguire saying something like "it is a joke" or "what a joke" but was "confident that Harry did not call the Fourth Official or any other Match Official a joke."
FA Hearing Outcome and Ban Consequences
The hearing committee preferred Donohue's evidence over Maguire's account, noting the player's use of "along the lines of" and Zirkzee's inability to definitively recall the exact words. With Maguire admitting the charge, the FA automatically applied another one-match ban.
This extended suspension means Maguire will miss Manchester United's upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea, adding to the team's defensive challenges during a crucial period of the season.
Official's Clarification and Certainty
Fourth official Donohue acknowledged some uncertainty about the first part of the alleged insult, stating: "Whilst I think Mr Maguire said 'You're a joke', I wouldn't be able to respond to this with certainty."
However, he maintained clarity about the second sentence: "'You're all a f****** joke', I do remember hearing with clarity and remember thinking that the comment was aimed collectively at the group of officials. I would be prepared to say with certainty that these words were said."
The FA's decision underscores their commitment to maintaining respect for match officials, with written documentation now publicly explaining the rationale behind Maguire's extended punishment.
