Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kevin Johnson died from blunt head trauma and stab wounds at a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner. The 55-year-old was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning after being found unconscious. His death has been ruled a homicide and is under investigation.
Johnson, a native of Los Angeles, was a fourth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 1993. He also played for the Minnesota Vikings and the Oakland Raiders before joining the Eagles. During his two years with Philadelphia, he recorded 43 tackles, including seven sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown. He played 15 games for the Raiders in 1997.
After his NFL career, Johnson played in the Arena Football League for the Orlando Predators and the Los Angeles Avengers. He played college football at Texas Southern University.
Investigators believe Johnson had been living at the encampment at the time of his death. Friends reported that he had faced health issues later in life, which contributed to his situation.
