Pat Nevin has spoken out after being dropped from his roles at Chelsea without any explanation, ending a 13-year association with the club. The 60-year-old, who made 242 appearances for Chelsea between 1983 and 1988, was told at the start of the season that his columns for the programme and website were no longer required. He was also not informed about his co-commentary duties, and has not been invited to provide them this season.
Nevin had become a staple at the club, writing around 750 articles over 13 years. However, he insists he holds no grudge. In a tweet, he said: "Such kind sentiments re my CFC departure. Thank you all. So kind of everyone, but honestly don't stress-others losing their jobs and now in dire financials circs are more worthy of consideration." Speaking to The Telegraph, he added: "There are no bad feelings, you just shrug your shoulders and move on."
Fans have expressed disappointment at the club's decision, with one calling it a "big misstep" and another labelling it "disgraceful". Nevin, who now works as a co-commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live, has not shied away from criticising Chelsea's recent recruitment. Writing for BBC Sport in November, he said: "For all the possession stats, chances created and positive expected goals, 18 months on and it is the same old story for the 'all-new Clearlake Chelsea'. Around £1 billion spent and they still can't field a fit regular goalscorer."
Chelsea currently sit 10th in the Premier League with just four wins from 13 games, despite heavy spending under Todd Boehly's ownership. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has struggled with injuries and inconsistency. Nevin remains busy promoting his book and working for the BBC.
