Thomas Tuchel is expected to make five changes to England's starting lineup for their final World Cup Group L match against Panama on Saturday, following a frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana. The Three Lions need a victory to secure top spot in the group and build momentum heading into the knockout stages.
Stones Returns to Bolster Defence
John Stones is set to replace Marc Guehi in central defence. The Manchester City veteran was omitted against Ghana as a precaution due to his limited Premier League appearances this season—just nine games—after battling thigh and calf problems. His experience and composure are seen as vital for the knockout rounds, and the Panama match offers an ideal opportunity to regain match sharpness.
Ezri Konsa and Guehi looked vulnerable at times against Ghana, particularly when exposed by long balls, reinforcing the view that Stones remains England's best centre-back.
O'Reilly Replaces James at Left-Back
Reece James is set to be rested to protect his fitness, with Nico O'Reilly coming in at left-back. James, who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, started the tournament strongly but Tuchel is keen to preserve him for more important fixtures ahead.
O'Reilly, a City full-back, offers composure on the ball and an aerial threat, as demonstrated when he hit the crossbar late against Ghana. Djed Spence, who played left-back against Ghana, is expected to shift to his preferred right-back position.
Rogers to Step In for Injured Rice
Declan Rice is likely to be rested after appearing with heavy strapping on his left calf following the Ghana match. The Arsenal midfielder had already been managing a back injury and was seen limping after the game. Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa is the natural replacement, bringing driving runs and goal threat from midfield.
Tuchel said after the Ghana match: "We have to manage the squad carefully. Some players are carrying knocks and we need to make sure everyone is ready for the challenges ahead."
Saka and Rashford to Start
Bukayo Saka, who has been managing an Achilles injury, is expected to start on the right wing after an impressive cameo against Ghana. Tuchel confirmed pre-match: "He is getting better and better, feels no more pain and he is ready to go." Saka may be withdrawn at half-time to manage his workload.
Marcus Rashford is set to replace Anthony Gordon on the left flank. Gordon struggled to make an impact against Ghana and was substituted in the 64th minute. Rashford's pace and directness, combined with Harry Kane and Morgan Rogers, could provide a potent attacking threat.
Projected England XI vs Panama
Jordan Pickford; Djed Spence, John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Nico O'Reilly; Elliot Anderson; Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers; Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford.
England currently lead Group L with four points, one ahead of Croatia and Ghana. A win against Panama would guarantee top spot and a potentially easier path in the round of 16.
