England fans have named the manager they want to lead the Three Lions into Euro 2028 following the national team's World Cup exit. Despite securing a third-placed finish, their best result since 1966, there remains a sense of disappointment in the wake of their semi-final defeat to Argentina. It saw England throw away a narrow lead with just six minutes remaining to lose in spectacular fashion.
Tuchel blamed for World Cup exit
Thomas Tuchel was widely blamed for the defeat as England retreated in an ill-fated attempt to protect their advantage. As the clock ticked down, they had six defensive players on the pitch and were sitting deep in a 5-4-1 formation. England only had 12 per cent of possession between Anthony Gordon's opener and Lisandro Martinez's winning header in the second minute of stoppage time.
Their defensive shift proved disastrous and led to widespread calls for Tuchel to be relieved of his duties after the final whistle. However, after a period of reflection, it seems many England fans would prefer the 52-year-old to stay on and see out his contract.
Poll results: Tuchel top choice
Over 36 per cent of respondents to our latest poll said they wanted Tuchel to remain in post, making him the most popular option to lead the Three Lions into the next tournament cycle. In second place was Pep Guardiola, who received 34 per cent of the vote, ahead of Eddie Howe (10 per cent) and Frank Lampard (eight per cent).
It recently emerged that the FA have no plans to axe Tuchel in light of England's heartbreaking World Cup exit. He remains tied down until Euro 2028, having signed a contract extension earlier this year.
Guardiola's previous talks with FA
Guardiola, meanwhile, would appear to be the preferred choice to succeed Tuchel among those wanting him sacked. It was recently reported that the Spaniard was sounded out by FA executives in 2024, after Gareth Southgate stepped down from the role. Guardiola was said to have reached a verbal agreement to take over as the new England manager, only to have a late change of heart and commit to Manchester City for another two years.
He left the Etihad Stadium at the end of last season before agreeing to become a global ambassador for City Football Group. In his new role, the 55-year-old will be expected to provide technical advice and work on special projects across the global network of clubs.
