Gordon Elliott Plots Fresh Tactics for Brighterdaysahead's Cheltenham Bid

Trainer Gordon Elliott is devising a novel logistical approach in an attempt to secure a long-awaited Cheltenham Festival victory for the talented mare Brighterdaysahead. The seven-year-old, who has endured frustrating defeats at Prestbury Park in recent years, is set for another shot at the Champion Hurdle in 2026, with her trainer contemplating significant changes to her preparation routine.

Past Disappointments and Current Prospects

Brighterdaysahead's Cheltenham record has been marked by unexpected setbacks. In 2024, she suffered a shock defeat as the odds-on favourite in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle. The following year, she again underwhelmed when strongly fancied for the Champion Hurdle, finishing behind the surprise winner Golden Ace in a thrilling contest.

Her fortunes appeared to shift this season when she reversed form with Lossiemouth to claim victory in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown. This performance has earned her another opportunity in hurdling's blue riband event, with bookmakers installing her as joint-favourite alongside Dan Skelton's The New Lion.

Elliott's Strategic Considerations

At a recent media event hosted by The Jockey Club, Elliott revealed he is considering stabling Brighterdaysahead outside the Cheltenham racecourse itself. "We might do something different with her this year and stable her outside Cheltenham," the trainer explained. "I think the ground is going to be beautiful, safe ground on the Tuesday."

Elliott offered perspective on her previous Festival performances: "The first year the mare didn't do anything wrong. I think Jack (Kennedy) and Paul (Townend) were looking at each other and that good mare called Golden Ace came and nabbed both of them. Last year she wasn't right, after Punchestown we discovered something and we've rectified it."

The Competitive Landscape

This year's Champion Hurdle presents a notably open contest without a clear frontrunner. The field may include reigning champion Golden Ace, and potentially Constitution Hill depending on his performance in a much-anticipated Flat outing at Southwell.

"It is an open Champion Hurdle with three or four horses at the top of the betting that could win it," Elliott assessed. "The Skelton horse is very good, Golden Ace keeps going underneath the radar and I suppose all eyes will be on Constitution Hill to see what he does back over hurdles."

Elliott on Constitution Hill's Situation

When asked about Nicky Henderson's dilemma regarding Constitution Hill, Elliott showed understanding for his fellow trainer's predicament. "I'd probably stop talking to you and let the horse do the talking!" he quipped. "The horse has been unlucky, I'm not having that he's a bad jumper. He's just been a bit unlucky and has maybe lost his confidence, but Nicky Henderson is a master trainer and whatever he does will be the right thing for the horse."

Elliott emphasized his focus remains firmly on his own charge: "I worry about my own horses and not anybody else's to be honest. She's in good form and I couldn't be happier with her."

As preparations intensify for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, all eyes will be on whether Elliott's potential stabling adjustment can finally deliver the Festival success that has so far eluded Brighterdaysahead.
