Harvey Elliott's loan spell at Valencia has taken a difficult turn, with the Spanish club bottom of La Liga without a win after five games. Manager Carlos Corberan is under growing pressure following a 5-0 defeat to Barcelona and a loss to Sevilla.
The 23-year-old midfielder joined Valencia on a season-long loan from Liverpool this summer, having endured a difficult spell at Aston Villa last season. He made his debut off the bench against Barcelona and was again introduced as a substitute in the Sevilla defeat, but was unable to influence proceedings.
Corberan under pressure at Valencia
Valencia appointed Corberan, the former West Brom boss, in December 2024. Spanish outlet AS reported on the Sevilla defeat: "There's a chance that Carlos Corberán wrote the epitaph of his (first) stint as Valencia's coach in Nervion [Sevilla]."
Quizzed on his future, Corberan said: "I've said that I always have the confidence and the strength, but sometimes answering that question after a defeat isn't the most appropriate thing to do."
It is a disastrous start for Elliott, who had hoped to get his career back on track after a difficult spell in the Midlands last season. Liverpool could face a scenario where the uncertainty at Valencia prevents Elliott from impressing, leaving them to make another crucial decision on his future next summer.
Camara opens up on failed Chelsea move
Reported Liverpool target Lamine Camara has spoken about his failed move to Chelsea from Monaco on transfer deadline day. The Blues saw a £47million deal to bring the 22-year-old to Stamford Bridge collapse.
talkSPORT subsequently reported that Liverpool instructed the player 'to wait' and that a move to Anfield next summer remained a possibility. Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro confirmed the star had requested to leave the club.
Speaking during a press conference on Friday, the midfielder said: "It was a somewhat turbulent and difficult time. But that’s part of a player’s life. I tried to remain professional, avoid dwelling on it, and move on so I could quickly focus on the upcoming match in Paris. Once it was over, there was no point thinking about it."
Asked if he wanted to go to Chelsea, he said: "Saying that now would imply I’m no longer fully present with the team. Yes, there was a possibility I might leave, but it didn’t happen at the last minute. These things happen. Look at the example of Julian Alvarez with Atletico Madrid. It happens all over the world, and I’m trying to turn the page as quickly as possible to focus on the season."
On whether he will move to England in the near future, he added: "If it doesn’t come back around, it will be because I gave up or didn’t work hard enough. If I keep going like this, I know I can help the team perform well. Football moves fast, and perhaps other chances will arise. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season."
