Liverpool Striker Hugo Ekitike's Season and World Cup Hopes in Jeopardy
Liverpool's forward Hugo Ekitike is facing a devastating nine-month layoff after sustaining a severe injury during the Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old French international's dream of representing his country at the upcoming World Cup appears to be shattered, with medical experts indicating a high probability of an Achilles tendon rupture.
Injury Incident at Anfield
During the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final, which PSG won 4-0 on aggregate, Ekitike went down unchallenged on the greasy Anfield surface. The striker seemed to slip, and despite attempts to rise with assistance from PSG defender Marquinhos, he was unable to stand and had to be stretchered off by medical staff. This incident has sparked major concerns for both Liverpool and the player's international aspirations.
Medical Expert's Diagnosis
In an interview with French outlet L'Equipe, Dr. Nicolas Baudrier provided a grim assessment based on images of the injury. He stated there is a 90 per cent chance that Ekitike has suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture, noting that such injuries typically occur during changes of direction or jumps, not from contact with opponents.
Dr. Baudrier explained, "The player describes it as a 'bolt from the blue,' as if he were being tackled. We saw it with Ekitike, who looked behind him to see if he'd been hit. He felt like he'd been tackled, but there was no one behind him. This really points to an Achilles tendon injury."
Recovery Timeline and World Cup Impact
The prognosis is bleak, with Dr. Baudrier emphasizing that partial ruptures are rare and surgery would be required. In the best-case scenario, a professional player needs nine months to return to the field, effectively ruling Ekitike out for the remainder of the season and the World Cup. He added, "If it is indeed a ruptured Achilles tendon, then the World Cup is over for him."
Liverpool Manager's Response
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his concern after the match, telling Amazon Prime, "[It's] not too good, we could all see that he didn't look well and didn't look right. We can all see it didn't look good. In the second-half he went home and I didn't see him." Slot lamented the timing of the injury, highlighting the challenges of losing key players during a crucial period.
This injury adds to Liverpool's woes this season, with the club already grappling with multiple player absences. Ekitike's potential long-term absence could significantly impact Liverpool's attacking options and their campaign in domestic and European competitions.
