Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitiké will miss the remainder of the season and this summer's World Cup with France after suffering a suspected achilles tendon rupture in the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. France head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed the news, dealing a major blow to both club and country.
The 23-year-old, who is Liverpool's leading scorer this season with 17 goals, underwent scans on Wednesday following his early exit at Anfield. Although the full extent of the injury has yet to be disclosed, Deschamps stated: 'Hugo suffered a serious injury...the severity will prevent him from finishing the season and from taking part in the World Cup.' Reports suggest Ekitiké could be sidelined until next year.
Ekitiké's absence is a significant setback for Liverpool manager Arne Slot as the club fights for Champions League qualification with six games remaining. The striker was signed from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer in a deal potentially worth £79m, and his injury leaves Alexander Isak—who has been out for four months—under increased pressure to recover full fitness.
With Mohamed Salah set to leave at the end of the season, Liverpool’s long-term attacking plans are now further complicated. The trio of Ekitiké, Isak and Florian Wirtz, signed for a combined £320m, have featured together for just 115 minutes this campaign.
