Edinburgh Castle Illuminated with Female Footballers in ScottishPower Partnership Renewal
The ancient fortress of Edinburgh Castle was dramatically illuminated on Saturday night with projected images of Scotland's female footballers, creating a stunning visual tribute to the women's game. The event marked ScottishPower's commitment to supporting women's football north of the border for another three years, extending its partnership with Scottish Women's Football and the Scottish Women's Premier League.
Historic Setting for Modern Celebration
At the Castle Esplanade, players, coaches, and parents gathered at dusk as the historic fortress was transformed with projected footage showcasing the journeys of young players developing into emerging professionals. The illumination also celebrated existing stars and professional players, creating a powerful symbol of the sport's growth and potential.
The event served as a public announcement of ScottishPower's renewed three-year commitment to women's football in Scotland. The energy company has been supporting the women's game for the past three years and is now extending that partnership through 2029.
Corporate Commitment to Equality
Keith Anderson, chief executive of ScottishPower, emphasized the company's dedication to equality of opportunity through sports support. "At ScottishPower, we're committed to equality of opportunity, and over the past three years our partnership with Scottish Women's Football and the Scottish Women's Premier League has shown just how powerful the right support can be for girls and women across Scotland," he stated.
Anderson continued: "We're proud to back the elite end of the game, but just as importantly, to help strengthen the entire pathway – from grassroots and youth football right through to the highest level. Together, we've focused on making a real, practical impact, from providing kit and boots to girls across the country to supporting development in areas like the Highlands and Islands that can too often be overlooked."
The executive made clear this was a long-term commitment: "Renewing our support for another three years is a clear statement of our intent. We're in this for the long term, committed to building momentum and helping women's football in Scotland reach its full potential."
Football Leadership Response
Aileen Campbell, chief executive at Scottish Women's Football, welcomed the continued support as a significant vote of confidence. "ScottishPower's continued commitment is a hugely important vote of confidence in the women's and girls' game across the country," she said.
Campbell highlighted the practical benefits of the partnership: "This partnership has already helped us strengthen the foundations of football in communities, supporting participation, improving the player pathway, and creating more opportunities for girls to stay in the sport and progress, whatever their starting point."
She particularly noted the importance of continued support for competitions: "The continuation of support for our National and Regional cups, the Youth Challenge Cups and the Highlands and Islands League and Cup is especially significant, because it reaches players and volunteers at every level. We're proud of what has been achieved so far, and we're excited to keep building real momentum over the next three years."
Symbolic Illumination
The Edinburgh Castle illumination served as both celebration and statement – using one of Scotland's most iconic landmarks to highlight the growing importance of women's football. The projected images of players at various stages of their careers created a visual narrative of development and achievement.
This event follows increasing recognition and investment in women's football across the United Kingdom, with Scotland making particular strides in developing both grassroots participation and professional pathways. The partnership renewal ensures continued resources for equipment, development programs, and competitive structures that support female players from childhood through to professional careers.
