Eddie Howe has reportedly been overlooked for the Manchester United manager's position, with the club choosing to keep Michael Carrick in charge for the foreseeable future. The decision comes despite United's poor form, having won just two of their last 12 matches across all competitions this season and sitting one point above the relegation zone.
Howe has been out of work since leaving Newcastle United in the summer. According to Express Sport, the Englishman now has four potential routes back into management.
Potential Destinations for Howe
Crystal Palace is identified as the club most likely to need a new manager in the coming weeks. Pierre Sage is reportedly under similar pressure to Carrick, with Palace level on points with United and hovering above the relegation zone after a recent 5-0 defeat. Fans are said to be turning on Sage, and a change in the managerial department appears imminent.
Newcastle United is another option. Howe is said to have led the decision to part ways with the club on the eve of the season. Matthias Jaissle has had an up-and-down tenure, and if the owners decide to make a change, a reunion with Howe could be pursued.
Other Clubs in the Mix
Nottingham Forest is also mentioned, with Oliver Glasner having left Palace for the City Ground and currently finding his side in the relegation zone. The situation at Forest is noted as having some similarities to the Newcastle job Howe took on in 2021, though the financial backing differs.
Manchester United itself remains a possibility. Given the volatility at Old Trafford, Carrick could still be sacked before Christmas. History suggests vacancies at the club are frequent, and if United's fortunes do not improve, the INEOS decision-makers may contact Howe.
