Demichelis threatens to quit RB Leipzig if targets missed

RB Leipzig head coach Martin Demichelis has said he will quit the Bundesliga club at the end of the season if he does not reach his targets. Demichelis, who won the Premier League and two League Cups with Manchester City during a three-year stint, took charge of the German club in the summer.

Mixed start at Leipzig

Results have been mixed so far, with the Red Bull side winning five of their eight Bundesliga fixtures. They sit 29th in the Champions League ahead of this week's matches, picking up just one win from their opening three games.

Despite a tough start, Demichelis enjoyed a 2-0 win at Schalke on Saturday to ease some pressure heading into a busy week. In his post-match press conference, he made an admission about his time at the club potentially coming to an end if things do not go well this season.

High standards set

He told reporters: "I know I have to achieve goals with RB Leipzig. That is why I am here. And if we do not achieve those goals by the end of the season, I will leave of my own accord. That is how it is. The people who know me know that very well."

Demichelis' high standards have not been solely reserved for RB Leipzig. Back in 2019, three years after leaving the Etihad Stadium, the former defender set a high bar for City.

"Nowadays it looks like is mandatory to win trophies," he told City's official website. "Winning has to be an ambition for people with a winning mindset like Pep and his players."

Champions League reunion

"Last season, City won the title with a big gap to the rest of contenders and he is the perfect manager to make the players feel that they want even improve on what they have done so far. It is a big challenge."

"When you arrive at this stage of the season and you can still achieve everything you are been fighting for, it is an incredible feeling for a player."

Should City be victorious on Wednesday night, they could move into the top eight in the Champions League.
