De Zerbi vindicated as Fernandes shines in Spurs win

Roberto De Zerbi's persistent efforts to convince Mateus Fernandes and his family to join Tottenham Hotspur have been vindicated, as the midfielder produced a standout performance in Spurs' historic victory at Chelsea.

During the summer, De Zerbi reportedly called Fernandes' parents every day to persuade them that Spurs was the right destination for their son, according to reports. Fernandes was at a crucial point in his career after West Ham's relegation to the Championship, following a similar fate with Southampton. Despite his technical ability, questions remained about how he would handle expectations at a bigger club.

De Zerbi's Protective Approach

De Zerbi focused on building a connection with Fernandes, aiming to shield him from the £85 million price tag, growing expectations, and increased scrutiny. This approach meant Fernandes, who has started only 50 per cent of Spurs' league games this season, had to be patient for opportunities.

With injuries and suspensions in midfield, De Zerbi had little choice but to start Fernandes away to Chelsea last weekend. It was only his fourth league start for the club, and Spurs had not won at Stamford Bridge in eight years.

Man-of-the-Match Performance

Fernandes rose to the occasion with a man-of-the-match display, helping Spurs secure just their second win in 42 attempts at Stamford Bridge. Alongside fellow summer signing Sandro Tonali, Fernandes dominated midfield as Spurs controlled the game, with late goals from a Mike Penders own goal and a fine solo effort from Mathys Tel sealing the win.

No player took more touches or completed more passes than the 22-year-old, and Tonali's robust performance complemented him well, with the Italian covering more ground than any other player. Together, they completed nine tackles and were dribbled past just once.

De Zerbi's Praise

De Zerbi praised Fernandes' display, saying: "Mateus Fernandes played 90 minutes with a big, big quality. I want to see Mateus Fernandes with personality. I want to see Fernandes enjoy with the ball. Even if he can make a mistake, it doesn't matter. It's not a problem, a mistake. But I want to see this personality from my team."

The performance against Chelsea showed that despite a slow start, Fernandes has the poise and ability to be central to De Zerbi's plans as Spurs aim for major honours again.
