Roberto De Zerbi has explained why James Maddison remained an unused substitute during Tottenham's 1-0 defeat to Leeds, insisting the midfielder is fit despite being overlooked for the second consecutive game.
Maddison has struggled for fitness this season and has not played since coming off with a suspected groin injury against Chelsea last month. He was named in the matchday squad for Spurs' last two games against Crystal Palace and Leeds, but was not brought on in either match.
De Zerbi's substitution decision
Asked about Maddison's situation, De Zerbi said he considered introducing the 29-year-old late in the game against Leeds before opting for 18-year-old Luca Williams-Barnett, who made only his second senior appearance.
"James, I thought (about bringing him on) in the last substitution before Luca Williams-Barnett, but I saw (Mohammed) Kudus very tired," De Zerbi said.
"And James didn't work until Thursday, Thursday he worked half part of the training yesterday. And in the last 15 minutes maybe could be a good solution, but I decided to make that change because Luca in the winger position, is better than Maddison."
Tel injury concern
Spurs now face the international break with concerns over Mathys Tel, who was seen leaving Elland Road on crutches with a protective boot on his left foot after a heavy challenge from Jayden Bogle. De Zerbi has admitted the injury could be a "bad" one.
