De Zerbi Demands Spurs Forge Brotherhood to Escape Relegation Battle
Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has issued a rallying cry to his squad, urging them to forge a band of brothers in their desperate fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League. With the team winless in fourteen league matches and languishing in the bottom three, the Italian coach has emphasised that technical improvement is not the immediate priority.
A Call for Character and Personality
"They don’t need to improve as players now," declared De Zerbi ahead of his first home game in charge against former club Brighton. "To achieve our target, we don’t need to become better with the ball, or better without the ball. We have to be stronger in our heads, to have character and stronger relationships between the players."
He stressed the need for belief, pride, and unity, grabbing the Spurs crest on his shirt to underline his point. "We have to believe in ourselves, believe in our club, be happy to wear this shirt, be happy and proud to work in this big club. Just that is enough," he asserted.
Leadership Void and Key Players
The absence of captain Cristian Romero, ruled out for the season with a knee injury, has created a significant leadership void. De Zerbi has explicitly challenged defender Micky van de Ven and striker Dominic Solanke to step up and fill that gap.
"I’d like to push with Solanke, because he is one of best strikers in the Premier League," said De Zerbi. "I want him stronger as a personality and character on the pitch." He also highlighted the young leadership of Xavi Simons, noting his composure to receive the ball "when the ball is hot."
Other players identified as potential leaders in Romero's absence include Joao Palhinha and the fit-again Rodrigo Bentancur. De Zerbi also name-checked injured stars Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison, the latter of whom he praised for being a "top player with the ball but also with personality, character, mentality on the pitch." He expressed a desire for Van de Ven to reach a similar level of on-pitch authority.
Passionate Plea and Team Bonding
Reminded of his last fiery touchline appearance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium—which resulted in a red card during a confrontation with then-interim Spurs boss Cristian Stellini in April 2023—De Zerbi was unrepentant about his passionate nature. "I can’t change who I am," he stated, adding "We have to show there is blood not water inside."
In a bid to foster the crucial team spirit he demands, De Zerbi took his players for a bonding meal at the Mayfair restaurant Bacchanalia. "We ate very well, the food was amazing and if we win, I am ready to pay every week for one dinner," he quipped. However, he acknowledged the severe challenge ahead, noting his players currently lack confidence.
"What I can ask is for them to be closer on the pitch, to consider teammates like brothers," he implored. "Because if you consider your team-mate like a brother you go to help him and if he is wronged you hug him and kiss him. We need this, for sure." He concluded with a stark warning, emphasising that players lacking the required personality and character "don’t play with me."
