David Raya eyes Yashin Trophy after remarkable Arsenal season

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya hopes his "remarkable season" is enough to win the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or ceremony on Monday.

The Spaniard is one of ten goalkeepers shortlisted for the award, which recognises the best goalkeeper in world football.

Raya's rise to the shortlist

Raya finished seventh in the voting for the prize last year, when Gianluigi Donnarumma won the award. That was the first time the former Brentford shot-stopper had made the final shortlist, and he is expected to improve on that finish this time around.

World Cup-winning goalkeeper Unai Simon, who starts ahead of Raya for Spain, is also in the running, along with Thibaut Courtois and Emiliano Martinez. Matvey Safonov is on the shortlist too, after his Paris Saint-Germain side beat Arsenal in the Champions League final last season.

A season of clean sheets

Raya kept 19 clean sheets in the Premier League last term. He was also named in the Champions League team of the season, having kept nine clean sheets in 14 appearances in the competition.

Speaking to the media ahead of Arsenal's European showdown with Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, Raya was asked about his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and his chances of winning the Yashin Trophy.

"I'm delighted to hear those comments and what people think, especially you guys," Raya said. "I just think that I've done a remarkable season. I picked up where I left off and just tried to be the best for myself and the team to win matches."

"I'm nominated and hopefully I'm in the conversation of winning. We will see, that's on Monday. Now the important thing is to win tomorrow, but delighted with the comments and everything. Thank you."
