Manchester United have appointed Darren Fletcher as the new lead coach of their Under-18s squad with immediate effect. The former Scotland midfielder returns to a youth coaching role after previously serving on the first-team staff.
Fletcher, 41, first rejoined United as an Under-16s coach in 2020 before being promoted to the first-team coaching setup under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in early 2021. He will now oversee the development of the club's most promising teenagers, having already led the Under-18s through a pre-season training camp in Germany and an 8-2 friendly win over QPR.
“I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players,” Fletcher said. “I'm looking forward to working with such a talented age-group; supporting them to reach their potential and preparing them to enjoy careers at the highest level possible.”
Fletcher, who graduated from United's academy, won five Premier League titles, two League Cups, an FA Cup, the Champions League and the Club World Cup during a playing career that spanned over 340 appearances for the club. His twin sons Jack and Tyler, 18, both play for United at youth level after joining from Manchester City in 2023.
Director of football Jason Wilcox commented: “We are delighted that Darren will lead our Under-18s group. He knows exactly what it takes to be a successful academy graduate and has played a key role in shaping the pathway for so many of our young players in recent years. Darren's excellent relationships across the entire staff will only increase the strong connection between the academy and first team.”
Fletcher replaces Adam Lawrence, who left United earlier this summer after leading the Under-18s to three trophies in the 2023/24 season and an FA Youth Cup semi-final.
