Former Manchester United Striker Danny Webber Opens Up About Contract Rejection
Former Manchester United striker Danny Webber has revealed he turned down a substantial new contract offer from legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, citing feelings of unfair treatment during his time at Old Trafford. Webber, now 44, made the difficult decision despite his lifelong support for the club and admiration for Ferguson.
Youth Promise Unfulfilled at Old Trafford
Webber joined Manchester United's academy during the 1997/98 season, quickly making an impression by scoring 16 goals in just 11 appearances for the Under-17s. His performances earned him a professional contract in December 1998, with senior strikers Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke both praising his potential.
"I used to clean Andy's boots, and he was always looking out for me, telling me I was doing really well," Webber recalled. "He'd mention me, really talk me up, in interviews with United's magazine or on MUTV. I was only 16 or 17, and it gave me a real buzz. With Yorkie, it was more tips on how I should be doing things. They were great strikers, and they both rated me."
Frustration With Limited First-Team Opportunities
Despite this early promise, Webber struggled to break into the senior squad, finding himself stuck in the reserves behind players like Diego Forlan and David Bellion. He watched as Forlan went through a prolonged goal drought while continuing to receive regular first-team selection.
"I'd watch Forlan miss chance after chance and think, 'I'm sure I could do better,'" Webber said. "He went 20-odd games before scoring. Kept being picked week after week. I remember thinking I'd have settled for half that many opportunities."
The Difficult Decision to Leave United
When Sir Alex Ferguson offered Webber a new three-year contract, the striker made the surprising decision to reject it. "United were always my team, but I had to consider forging a career for myself," he explained. "I felt there had been an injustice, so when Sir Alex told me I could have another three years, the answer had to be, 'No.'"
Webber's decision came despite Ferguson showing considerable support when the player broke his leg soon after a loan spell at Watford. "At the time we were talking about a new contract, and he phoned me in hospital to reassure me the offer stood," Webber revealed. "It made it more difficult to turn down, but I had to."
Career After Manchester United
Following his departure from Old Trafford, Webber played for nine different clubs including Watford, Sheffield United, Portsmouth, and Leeds United. His career took an unusual turn when he signed for Salford City after providing commentary on a friendly match for the club.
"I played the final 20 minutes and as a result of that, Gary asked me to sign," Webber said of his Salford move. "And then, the next morning, a 5am wake-up call - it was Gary Neville. 'Would you come and play?', he asked."
Webber enjoyed a late-career resurgence at Salford, scoring 38 goals in 56 appearances before retiring in July 2016. He now reflects on his decision to leave Manchester United without regret, believing it was necessary for his professional development.
"I sometimes wonder whether I might be knocking them in for United now if I had stayed," he admitted, "especially with Ruud Van Nistelrooy leaving and Louis Saha missing a few games through injury. I don't sit and mope about it, though. I didn't work all those years to be in the reserves in my mid-20s. I don't regret making the break."
