Matheus Cunha has expressed his belief that Michael Carrick deserves to be appointed as the permanent manager of Manchester United, stating that the interim boss has brought back the magic of Sir Alex Ferguson's era to the current squad. The Brazilian winger scored the opening goal in Sunday's 3-2 victory over Liverpool, a result that secured United's place in next season's Champions League and extended their impressive record under Carrick to 10 wins and just two defeats in 14 matches.
Cunha's endorsement of Carrick
Speaking after the match, Cunha said: "I don't think it's in my hands. But what he did, he's full of confidence in the group. How he teaches everyone is amazing. I think he has the magic with like these Ferguson times, these kinds of things, then he comes and brings [it] to us. Teach us how it was, and to be part of everything, then he did this, it's amazing, he's a pleasure, and then of course I think he deserves it."
The club is expected to make a decision on Ruben Amorim's permanent successor at the end of the season, but Cunha has joined several teammates in publicly backing Carrick for the role.
Champions League importance
Cunha also commented on the significance of United's return to the Champions League, suggesting that the competition benefits from the club's participation. "It's one of the biggest privilege I have to play at this club and we know the goal of the season is to be there. I think Champions League without this club is not the same competition, and this club without Champions League is not same club. When we come in, I think there were a lot of doubts about how the club will come back. I'm so happy to be part of this."
Scoring in big games
The winger has developed a habit of finding the net in high-profile matches, having also scored against Arsenal and Chelsea this season. He revealed that his friends often predict his success in such games. "These kind of games are a dream to play and then score in this kinds of games... My friends play these kind of games with me every single time. They say, 'I need to bet on you because you love this' and I said, 'Don't bet, please!' But I feel like I'm so happy to be part of these games as an important player."
