Crystal Palace Boss Oliver Glasner Banned from Driving for Six Months After Speeding
Crystal Palace Manager Glasner Gets Six-Month Driving Ban for Speeding

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been handed a six-month driving ban after he was caught exceeding the speed limit in one of London's 20mph zones. The 51-year-old Austrian, who led the club to FA Cup victory last season, was captured by a speed camera while driving his BMW through traffic lights in July of the previous year.

Details of the Speeding Offence

Glasner was driving at 29mph along a stretch of Old Kent Road in Bermondsey, which has a strict 20mph limit. The offence occurred just before 7:30am on July 15, shortly after his successful FA Cup campaign with Crystal Palace. Due to previous driving offences on his record, Glasner faced an automatic disqualification under UK law.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

At Willesden Magistrates' Court, Glasner pleaded guilty to the speeding charge. In an attempt to avoid disqualification, he submitted a handwritten note to the court, vowing not to break the law again. He stated, 'I fully accept responsibility for my actions and understand the seriousness of this matter. I have taken steps to ensure it will not happen again.' He also mentioned that due to his professional role, he would address the issue appropriately.

Despite his plea, a magistrate, operating under the Single Justice Procedure in a private session, imposed the six-month driving ban on Glasner last Tuesday. In addition to the ban, he was ordered to pay a £660 fine, £130 in costs, and a £264 victim surcharge.

Prosecution and Legal Process

The Metropolitan Police brought the prosecution against Glasner. According to case worker Emily Delroy, Glasner initially attempted to settle the matter by paying a fine. However, this would have resulted in his licence accumulating 12 or more points, triggering a ban. Consequently, the payment was refunded, and the case was referred for prosecution.

Glasner formally pleaded guilty in writing on January 27 and later accepted the ban without a court hearing in a second letter dated February 16. Details of the case emerged this week after court documents were made accessible to the public.

Broader Context of 20mph Zone Enforcement

Glasner was among 1,089 motorists prosecuted last week for violating 20mph speed limits across the UK. Magistrates issued fines totalling over £157,000 and imposed 27 driving bans in these cases, highlighting the strict enforcement of such zones to enhance road safety.

This incident comes at a challenging time for Crystal Palace, as just three days before Glasner's speeding offence, the club faced a setback when their European qualification from the FA Cup win was downgraded. Nonetheless, Glasner's commitment to legal compliance remains a focal point as he continues his managerial duties.
