Crystal Palace Take Commanding Lead Over Shakhtar Donetsk in Conference League Semifinal
Crystal Palace Lead Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 in Semifinal

Crystal Palace took a significant step towards the UEFA Conference League final with a 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their semifinal in Poland. Daichi Kamada, the Japan midfielder who previously scored for Oliver Glasner's Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semifinal against West Ham, was again the match-winner, scoring one goal and setting up another for Jørgen Strand Larsen.

Fast Start and Shakhtar's Response

Ismaïla Sarr opened the scoring after just 21 seconds, the fastest goal in Conference League history, capitalising on a defensive lapse from Shakhtar. The Senegal forward has now scored eight goals in 11 appearances in the competition. However, Shakhtar, featuring seven Brazilians in their starting lineup, gradually asserted themselves and equalised early in the second half through Oleg Ocheretko after a corner.

Kamada's Decisive Impact

Kamada restored Palace's lead with a left-footed strike after the ball fell to him in the box. He then turned provider for Strand Larsen, who scored the third after a defensive error from Valeriy Bondar. Kamada received a standing ovation from the away fans when substituted, amid speculation he will leave at the end of the season along with Glasner.

Glasner's Future and Team Performance

Glasner, who led Palace to FA Cup glory last season, remains focused on the present. "I promised I will give my best and try to be the best Oliver Glasner I can be until the last day," he said. "Now it is 100% focus, hopefully until the 27th of May with a huge party." Palace's defensive vulnerabilities on set pieces were evident, but their attacking prowess and ability to control the game in the latter stages of the first half proved decisive.

Other Semifinal Result

In the other semifinal, Rayo Vallecano secured a 1-0 first-leg lead against Strasbourg, with Alemão scoring the only goal from a corner.
