Sir Keir Starmer has announced that legislation will be introduced this week to enable the government to take full national ownership of British Steel. The decision follows unsuccessful commercial sale negotiations for British Steel in Scunthorpe, with the proposed legislation subject to a public interest test.
Protecting a Strategic Asset
The GMB steel union welcomed the announcement, stating it will protect the entire steel industry from foreign ownership and secure a nationally strategic asset. The legislation is designed to cover the whole steel industry, not just British Steel, to safeguard it from foreign owners.
Starmer's Commitment
In his speech, Starmer also addressed recent speculation about a leadership challenge, affirming his commitment to fight any such attempt. He warned that the UK faces going down 'a very dark path' to 'dangerous opponents' if the government fails to act decisively on industrial policy.
The renationalisation marks a significant shift in government approach to the steel sector, aiming to ensure long-term stability and investment in UK steelmaking.
