Crystal Palace Captain Hails 'Sensational' Conference League Semi-Final Achievement
Captain Dean Henderson has hailed Crystal Palace's "sensational" achievement after the Premier League side secured a place in the semi-finals of the Conference League with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Italian club Fiorentina. The Eagles are through to the last four of the competition, marking a historic moment for the club as they reach their first-ever European semi-final.
A Tense Encounter in Tuscany
Crystal Palace travelled to Tuscany with a commanding 3-0 first-leg advantage, but Fiorentina made the tie interesting by claiming a 2-1 home victory on the night. Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring for the Eagles in the 17th minute with a powerful header, teed up by Daniel Munoz, marking his seventh goal of Palace's European campaign and 17th of the season. However, Albert Gudmundsson's penalty reduced Fiorentina's deficit back to three goals, and Cher Ndour gave the hosts the lead eight minutes after the break.
Despite the pressure, Palace showed great resilience to see out the remainder of the match and secure their progression. Henderson described the game as "very tough," noting that a 3-0 lead can be a dangerous scoreline, but emphasised the team's determination to advance.
Injury Concerns for Palace Boss
It was not all positive news for Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who was forced into two first-half changes following injuries to key players. England midfielder Adam Wharton and defender Maxence Lacroix both had to be substituted after colliding with Munoz. Glasner later revealed that Wharton seemed to have sustained an adductor issue, which he initially suggested "doesn't look so serious, but we will have to assess."
Lacroix "felt something in his knee" but appears to have escaped a serious injury, posting a flexed-bicep photo to his Instagram Stories after the game with the caption: "No problem, thank you Lord! Semi-finals here we go!" Glasner praised his side's resilience, stating they "showed great resilience" and "deserve to play in the semi-final."
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
Crystal Palace's final opponent on the road to the Leipzig final is Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. The two legs will be played away on April 30 and at Selhurst Park on May 7. Henderson expressed his excitement about the achievement, telling TNT Sports: "This is unbelievable. Obviously for this football club it's sensational really, when you think obviously about the FA Cup last year, and then to keep going, to write a new chapter in the book, it's phenomenal."
He also acknowledged the support of the fans, saying: "(The fans) have stuck by us in the difficult times this season, and hopefully we can go and deliver something really special." Glasner added that it's a "massive achievement for the players, it's a massive achievement for Crystal Palace, and we are enjoying tonight." He emphasised the team's ambition, noting: "Of course, when you play in the semi-final you want to get it all at the end, and that's what we will go for."
H Henderson concluded with a focus on the team's togetherness, stating: "Of course the aim is to go and win it, that's what the aim is. We have togetherness in this group. So at the business end of the season, we come together and we go (forward)." This victory not only cements Palace's place in European football history but also sets the stage for an exciting semi-final clash against Shakhtar Donetsk.
