Coventry's £3.5m Jarni saga: four-day stint before Real Madrid
Coventry's Jarni saga: four-day stint before Real Madrid

Robert Jarni's shock move to Coventry City in 1998 lasted just four days before he left for Real Madrid without making a single appearance for the Sky Blues. The Croatian winger, who turns 58 on October 26, signed for £2.6m in June 1998 but was sold to the Spanish giants for £3.5m shortly after.

A Career Built on the Left Flank

Jarni earned a reputation as one of the finest left-footed players in the world during the mid-1990s. He won Serie A with Juventus after moving from Hajduk Split to Italian clubs Bari and Torino, before truly blossoming at Real Betis in Spain.

A star for Croatia at Euro 96, where his nation reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winners Germany, Jarni impressed again at the 1998 World Cup. His pinpoint crosses and surging runs helped Croatia finish third, beating the Netherlands 2-1 to claim bronze.

The Coventry Move and Rapid Exit

Jarni arrived at Highfield Road in a £2.6m deal in June 1998, with fans thrilled at the prospect of him fighting for a place in Gordon Strachan's team. However, as he watched from the stands in a suit and sunglasses, a bid arrived from Real Madrid.

Barely four days later, Jarni was unveiled as a Real Madrid signing. Coventry pocketed just shy of £1m in profit from the £3.5m transfer, having hosted the European icon for only a few hours.

Conspiracy Theories and the Real Story

The rapid turnaround sparked conspiracy theories. Claims in Spanish media suggested Betis had refused to sell him to Madrid, raising questions about whether the deal was an elaborate scheme between the two clubs. Alternative theories emerged that Jarni's wife was horrified by Coventry and demanded they return to Spain.

Jarni later set the record straight, insisting Strachan genuinely wanted him. "Strachan wanted me to sign for Coventry," he stated. "He liked the way I played, he liked my performances in the Spanish league and with the national team. But after [he signed me at Coventry] we received an offer from Real Madrid and I decided to sign for them instead."

On the speculation about his wife's role, he added: "I wouldn't say it was my wife's decision, but it was a family decision. My family was against moving to England. We had small children and my daughter was in elementary school in Spain so we preferred to stay there rather than move to England."

Aftermath and Later Career

The transfer allowed Coventry to bring in Paul Hall and Marc Edworthy shortly afterwards, players not of the same calibre as Jarni, but it became one of the most bizarre Premier League transfer stories ever recorded.

Jarni spent just one season at Real Madrid, making most of his 35 appearances as a substitute and leaving with only an Intercontinental Cup. He then helped Las Palmas gain promotion to the top flight before a short spell at Panathinaikos. He later took up futsal, shining for MNK Split and Croatia, and coached multiple teams from Hajduk Split to Indian Super League outfit NorthEast United.
