Constitution Hill Set for Emotional Cheltenham Farewell
In a significant announcement, trainer Nicky Henderson has confirmed that the legendary racehorse Constitution Hill will make a farewell appearance at the Cheltenham Festival, despite being withdrawn from the Champion Hurdle. This decision marks the end of an era for the National Hunt star, who famously clinched the Champion Hurdle title in 2023, as he now embarks on a new career in flat racing.
Safety Concerns Prompt Withdrawal
The difficult choice to pull Constitution Hill from the Festival's flagship race was made jointly by Henderson and owner Michael Buckley after the horse experienced three falls in his last four hurdle races. They concluded that it would be unfair to both the horse and his regular jockey, Nico de Boinville, to continue competing over jumps given these recent incidents.
In a statement released last month, Henderson expressed the emotional weight of the decision, saying, "Michael Buckley and I have not surprisingly spent a lot of time soul searching and thinking over Constitution Hill's future and have sadly concluded that he will not be running in the Unibet Champion Hurdle." He added that it was a sad day for the National Hunt community, who had hoped to see the horse attempt to regain his crown.
Parade Planned for Supporters
Despite the withdrawal, Constitution Hill will still be present at Cheltenham, offering fans a chance to say goodbye. Henderson revealed, "Cheltenham have kindly invited Constitution Hill to parade on Champion Hurdle day to give all his National Hunt supporters the opportunity to say goodbye." This parade is scheduled for Tuesday, ensuring that admirers can celebrate his achievements one last time before his transition.
Transition to Flat Racing Strengthened
The decision to switch codes was bolstered by Constitution Hill's impressive performance on his flat racing debut at Southwell's all-weather course last month, where he stormed to victory. Henderson noted, "It was a terrific night for both him, us, and I believe British Horse Racing." He emphasized that the public perception and potential risks of continuing over hurdles influenced their choice, stating it wouldn't be fair to ask the horse and jockey to race jumps again.
Henderson also highlighted the horse's potential in his new career, saying, "He showed that he has another career in front of him that could possibly take us all to new playing fields." He thanked the thousands of supporters who shared their sentiments, noting that public opinion was nearly evenly split on the decision.
Impact on Cheltenham Festival Field
Constitution Hill is among several horses officially removed from the Champion Hurdle field. Henderson will not have any runners, as Lucky Place was also withdrawn, along with Wilful and Casheldale Lad. Meanwhile, the favourite, The New Lion, remains on track for the race, alongside contenders like Brighterdaysahead and last season's winner, Golden Ace.
This farewell appearance underscores the bittersweet nature of Constitution Hill's departure from jump racing, as fans and the racing community prepare to bid adieu to a true champion while anticipating his future successes on the flat.
