Clare Balding 'major shock' as defending champ Swiatek out

Defending Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek suffered a stunning third-round defeat on Saturday, losing to 29th seed Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in a match that left Centre Court spectators in disbelief. The 25-year-old Polish star, ranked third in the world and a six-time Grand Slam winner, was aiming to retain the title she won last year with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Amanda Anisimova.

Match Details

In the gripping third-round encounter, Świątek lost the first set in an extraordinary tie-break, 21-19, before falling in the second set 6-2, resulting in a final score of 7-6 (11-9), 6-2. The defeat marks a major upset at the All England Club, as Świątek had been a strong favourite to defend her crown.

Historical Achievement for Eala

Eala, 21, became the first Filipino player ever to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament. Speaking live on BBC One, presenter Clare Balding described the result as a "major shock." She said: "The defending champion, Iga Świątek, is out of Wimbledon, and Alex Eala is the first player from the Philippines ever to reach the fourth round here. A huge result, she is immensely popular all around the world, and gets really big crowds following her. Eala is only 21, and this is a massive moment for her, and indeed for the Philippines."

Emotional Reaction

After securing the winning point, Eala collapsed to the ground before rising to pay tribute to her opponent. Visibly emotional during her on-court interview, she said: "I'm really emotional. For someone like Iga, who has won so many Grand Slams, or maybe like Serena or Venus, this achievement may seem small but for someone who grew up in the Philippines it is huge. I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks, light-up shoes, and chubby cheeks, so to younger me, this is everything. But, obviously, just because I'm emotional does not mean I'm satisfied, so next round let's go!"

Other Matches

The sixth day of Wimbledon also featured Emma Navarro (USA) against Marta Kostyuk (UKR) on Court Two, and Great Britain's Arthur Fery facing Belgium's Zizou Bergs on Court 18. All action is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
