Tonali scored to give Tottenham a 1-0 lead over Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup pre-season friendly in Australia.
The £100m midfielder won back possession and found Solomon, whose return pass allowed Tonali to sweep a shot home from the edge of the box. A big deflection off Colwill beat the keeper.
Pre-season build-up
The London derby Down Under is the most high-profile friendly of the summer for both clubs, with Xabi Alonso and Robert De Zerbi embarking on their first pre-season campaigns at their respective clubs.
Chelsea are playing their second public match of the summer. Their first saw Xabi Alonso's reign begin with a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, as academy players featured heavily. Dastan Satpayev marked his debut with a goal and Joao Pedro came on to score a nine-minute hat-trick.
Spurs have had a more extensive summer schedule, with three friendlies and three wins: against MK Dons, Auckland FC and Sydney FC in the past fortnight. Luca Williams-Barnett is hoping for more minutes, but James Maddison and Mateus Fernandes have been ruled out through injury.
Early exchanges
In the early stages, Tonali was one of the busiest players on the pitch. He showed a nice first touch to drive through the centre, contrasting with a less assured touch from Solanke. Gallagher was booked for a very tough and needless tackle on Essugo, while Van Hecke reacted angrily after being penalised for a clear foul on Joao Pedro.
Palmer produced quick feet to spin away from three tackles but could not find Gittens to his left, and Hato headed wide from a floated ball. Chelsea pressed straight back after conceding, with much of the play taking place between halfway and the edge of the Spurs box.
