Chelsea Legend Millie Bright Retires in Emotional Letter

Chelsea and England legend Millie Bright has announced her retirement from football in an emotional open letter, bringing an end to a stellar 12-year spell with the Blues. The 32-year-old defender, who captained the club, made the decision to hang up her boots after a glittering career that saw her become Chelsea's longest-serving player.

A Career of Remarkable Achievements

Bright began her professional journey at Doncaster Belles before joining Chelsea ahead of the 2015 season. Over 12 remarkable years, she amassed 314 appearances and collected 20 trophies, including eight Women's Super League titles, six FA Cups, and four League Cups. She played a pivotal role in Chelsea's treble-winning campaigns in 2021 and 2025.

In her open letter to Blues fans, Bright stated: "I've been thinking about my future for a while now. There have been so many factors to consider, but I have decided that I'm ready to say goodbye to playing football. I'm hanging up my boots. I always said I would retire at the top, and that I would retire at this club. I'm living up to what I said. I'm not prepared to fight for any other club or pull on any other shirt. It's time."

Continued Role at Chelsea

Chelsea confirmed that Bright will remain at the club as a trustee of their foundation and take on a new position as club ambassador. She expressed her deep connection to the club: "This club means everything to me. In my career and my life, Chelsea has been the reason for getting up every single day and pushing through the hard times to get back to the good times. I owe everything to this club. The people that I've met, the friends that I've made, and of course, the memories."

International Career

Bright stepped away from international football in October 2025, having earned 88 caps for England. She was part of the Lionesses squad that won the European Championship on home soil and later captained the side to the World Cup final the following year. Last November, she broke Jordan Nobbs' Women's Super League appearance record of 210 games after featuring in Chelsea's 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Tribute Planned

Chelsea have confirmed that a tribute will be made to Bright during their last WSL fixture of the season against Manchester United on May 16 at Stamford Bridge. Her retirement marks the end of an era for the club and English football, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and leadership.
