Midfield Setbacks Prompt Chelsea's Interest
The West London club's interest has been sparked by significant setbacks affecting two of their own midfield talents. Romeo Lavia, the 22-year-old Belgian midfielder whose Chelsea career has been severely hampered by persistent injuries, has not featured for the Blues since early November. No clear timeframe has been established for his return to action, leaving a notable gap in the squad.
Furthermore, the situation surrounding young midfielder Dario Essugo remains shrouded in mystery. The 20-year-old was reportedly set to make his first appearance of the season against Arsenal in January, following recovery from a serious thigh injury. However, manager Liam Rosenior was forced to alter his substitutes during that match as other players indicated fatigue.
Since that planned debut was scrapped, Essugo has been conspicuously absent from match-day squads against both Brentford and Pafos, and has not been seen participating in training sessions. Douglas Luiz presents a potential short-term solution with valuable top-flight experience. The midfielder originally moved to the Premier League with Aston Villa before completing a high-profile £42.3 million transfer to Juventus in 2024. His time in Turin, however, did not yield the expected impact, leading to his loan move to Nottingham Forest at the start of this campaign.
