Sheffield Wednesday Face Further Points Deductions Amid Wage Crisis

Sheffield Wednesday could face two further points deductions this season for breaching English Football League regulations, but administrators are optimistic that there are 'four or five' credible bidders for the Championship club. Wednesday are bottom of the table on -6 points after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration last Friday, triggering an automatic 12-point penalty.

The club has failed to pay wages on time for five of the past seven months. An independent commission will determine the sanction for non-payment of March and May player wages. Further breaches are expected, relating to June, July and September wages, which could also result in point deductions applied this season.

Kris Wigfield of administrator Begbies Traynor reported a significant fan response since the administration announcement. 'Over £200,000 has been spent in the club shop, and we sold 9,000 tickets for the match in just 24 hours,' he said, adding that interest from potential buyers has been strong. 'By the end of November, if things go well, we might know who’s going to buy the football club.'

Wednesday are under five financial embargoes and prohibited from paying transfer fees until summer 2027 after repeated breaches of the 30-day payment rule. The EFL served a notice of withdrawal of membership on Friday but immediately suspended it as work with administrators continues towards a positive resolution. An independent commission will rule on last season's breaches, while a club financial review panel will handle any charges related to this season.
