Champions League Permutations: Thirty Teams Await Fate in Final Fixtures

There is just one matchday remaining in the Champions League league phase, with a staggering thirty clubs still unsure of their ultimate destiny as the competition heads into its decisive final week. The penultimate round of fixtures has set the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the reformed league stage, now in its second season, keeping fans and teams across Europe on tenterhooks.

All thirty-six qualified teams will be in action next week as the league stage draws to a close. Unlike previous formats where several matches might have been considered dead rubbers, this season's structure ensures there is an abundance of drama and high stakes, with plenty still to be resolved across the table.

Automatic Qualification for the Last Sixteen

As things stand, only two sides have definitively booked their places in the last sixteen. Premier League leaders Arsenal, alongside German giants Bayern Munich, have secured their progression following impressive campaigns. However, even the Gunners have significant incentives remaining. Teams finishing in the top four will be granted home second legs for both the last sixteen and quarter-final ties, with the top two also earning home second legs in the semi-finals.

Arsenal require just a single point against Kairat Almaty to clinch top spot in the table. For other contenders, the picture is more complex. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain will join Bayern in the knockout rounds if they win their final matches. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur can guarantee last sixteen berths with victories against Qarabag and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively; Liverpool would also likely qualify should they avoid defeat.

Chelsea and Newcastle United currently occupy the final positions within the coveted top eight. Wins against Napoli and PSG respectively would secure their automatic qualification. Draws could potentially suffice for all teams in the top eight, but this would be dependent on results involving clubs in the playoff positions, while defeats would leave them vulnerable to being overtaken.

The Intricate Playoff Picture

The positive news for all sides currently in the top eight is that they have, at minimum, assured themselves of a playoff position. Presently, sixteen clubs sit within the playoff zone, with ten of those still harbouring realistic hopes of securing an automatic last sixteen spot.

Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Atletico Madrid, and Atalanta are all level on thirteen points and will be hopeful of doing enough—a win, or potentially a draw in certain scenarios, could see them through. The latter outcome would only be sufficient if any of Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle, or PSG were to drop points.

Manchester City also find themselves among this group. A win, or even a draw against Galatasaray, could be enough for automatic qualification, but this is contingent on other results going their way. Every side from sixteenth position upwards has already been assured of a playoff spot.

For Inter Milan, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray, and Qarabag, victories in their final league stage games are realistically required to stand any chance of an automatic last sixteen place, and even that might not be sufficient. However, draws for Galatasaray and Qarabag could still secure at least a playoff position.

Looking at those nervously glancing over their shoulders, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen, and Monaco hold only a one-point advantage over the chasing pack. PSV Eindhoven, Athletic Bilbao, and Olympiacos require wins to guarantee their playoff spots; any other result leaves them all vulnerable to elimination.

Teams Facing Elimination

Four sides have already been eliminated from the competition ahead of their final league fixture: Eintracht Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, Villarreal, and Kairat Almaty. This quartet are set to be joined by a further eight clubs following the conclusion of the final matchday.

Starting with the most straightforward scenarios, Ajax, Union Saint-Gilloise, Pafos, Benfica, and Bodo/Glimt must all win to secure a playoff position. Anything less would result in their elimination from the Champions League.

For other clubs, a win is not absolutely crucial but would be immensely beneficial. Club Brugge sit just outside the playoff positions by a single point, while FC Copenhagen and Napoli are level on points with the last few sides currently occupying playoff berths, making their final matches critical.
