Sam Jones, the sharpshooting Boston Celtics guard who won 10 NBA titles alongside Bill Russell, has died at the age of 88. The Celtics confirmed his death, stating it was from natural causes.
Jones, known as 'Mr. Clutch' by teammates, was part of the Celtics dynasty that dominated the NBA in the 1960s. His 10 championships as a player rank second only to Russell's 11. The Celtics held a moment of silence for Jones before their game against the Phoenix Suns on Friday.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute, calling Jones 'one of the most prolific champions in all of professional sports.' Silver highlighted his 'selfless style, clutch performances and signature bank shot.' Jones was a member of the NBA's 25th, 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.
Jones is the third member of the Celtics dynasty to die in the last two years, following backcourt partner KC Jones and Tom Heinsohn, both of whom died in 2020. KC Jones's daughter Bryna tweeted: 'The Jones Boys are eternally reunited. Rest in Heaven, Uncle Sam.'
Born in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1933, Jones attended North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central) and was drafted by Celtics coach Red Auerbach in 1957. Initially doubting he would make the team, Jones went on to become a Hall of Fame player.
