Celtic's Defensive Masterclass Seals Scottish Cup Semi-Final Spot
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill hailed his injury-hit squad for delivering a defensive masterclass that propelled them into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. Despite missing key players and being outplayed for much of the match, the team showcased remarkable resilience to secure a dramatic penalty shootout victory over rivals Rangers at Ibrox.
Heroic Rearguard Action
With captain Callum McGregor and defender Kieran Tierney sidelined due to injury, Celtic found themselves on the back foot throughout the 120-minute encounter. However, they produced a disciplined and determined defensive performance, blocking numerous attempts and making crucial last-ditch challenges to keep Rangers at bay.
O'Neill described the effort as "really, really strong," drawing comparisons to previous defensive setups he has managed. "The number of blocks that we got in, the number of last-ditch challenges that we made in the game, just to stay in the tie, it was really amazing," he remarked.
Overcoming Key Absences
The Celtic boss emphasised that the achievement was even more commendable given the absence of two pivotal figures. McGregor was withdrawn as a precaution after feeling discomfort, while Tierney was deemed unfit to start, though he might have been available as a substitute.
"That shouldn't be overlooked," O'Neill stated. "For us to miss two big players like that and still come through, it was brilliant." He explained that risking Tierney could have backfired if he had been forced into action early and unable to continue.
Goalkeeper and Penalty Praise
O'Neill was effusive in his praise for goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, who commanded his area effectively and benefited from solid defensive support. "He did really well for us. I just asked him, could he command the six-yard box? And he did that wonderfully well," the manager noted.
Despite failing to register a single shot on target during open play, Celtic displayed nerves of steel in the penalty shootout. Forced to take their spot-kicks at the Rangers end of the stadium, they converted four perfect penalties through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Auston Trusty, Reo Hatate, and Tomas Cvancara, with the latter sealing the win after two Rangers misses.
"I must admit they took them brilliantly," O'Neill said. "They were obviously under a lot of pressure to do it. You can take penalties in training, but you just don't know what it's like until you step up and take them."
Boost for the Season Ahead
The victory extends Celtic's impressive away form to three wins and a draw from their last four matches on the road. O'Neill believes this result can provide a significant boost for the remainder of the campaign, both in the cup and the league.
"I think any victory at Ibrox is big news for us," he asserted. "From that viewpoint, it was great to win and we're into the semi-final of the cup. There's still a million miles to go, but that should give the players an enormous boost."
Looking ahead, O'Neill mentioned that the squad will enjoy a well-deserved couple of days off before regrouping on Wednesday to prepare for their next challenge against Motherwell. "The boys have a couple of days off now, which they deserve for their efforts," he concluded, highlighting the team's commitment and spirit.
