Celtic missed the chance to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the Premiership following a 2-0 loss away to Falkirk. The Hoops dominated possession but were denied by a stunning display from Bairns goalkeeper Scott Bain and were made to pay for slack defensive play at the other end.
Falkirk Strike Early
John McGlynn's team went into the clash off the back of three straight wins and opened the scoring after just three minutes. The hosts capitalised on a Celtic mix-up on the half-way line to feed the ball out to Ryan Strain, and his cross was inadvertently laid into the path of Ethan Ross to net past Sam Johnstone following Cameron Carter-Vickers' botched effort to clear his lines.
Bain was busy at the other end keeping his team in front, and they inflicted more damage on Celtic seven minutes before the interval when Scott Tanser was left free to burst into the box and calmly slot into the bottom corner.
Second-Half Resilience
McGlynn's side were happy to sit back and let Celtic come onto them in the second half. While Bain continued to dive left, right and centre to keep them at bay, the home team never seriously looked troubled.
Falkirk moved into the top four of the Premiership, while the defeat left Celtic with just four wins in their last 10 matches in all competitions.
Player Ratings
Sam Johnstone - 5: Appears to have won the gloves back from Viljami Sinisalo but could do virtually nothing about Falkirk's two goals. It will be interesting to see if the England international remains between the posts for Thursday's Europa League clash at home to Besiktas.
Colby Donovan - 5: The Scotland U21 international continues to get a regular run in the side, and that is set to continue following Alistair Johnston's latest injury setback. Was given a few issues by opposite number Eames but for the most part held his own.
Cameron Carter-Vickers - 3: A calamitous display that the former Tottenham man will want to forget. Got himself in a muddle trying to nick the ball back on the half-way line, and after getting back into possession, sent an attempted clearance straight into the path of Ross for the Bairns opener. Carter-Vickers was then caught out again for Falkirk's second when he let Tanser fly past him to fire past Johnstone. Outside of those errors, the 28-year-old was also guilty of making one stray pass too many.
Liam Scales - 4: Like his defensive partner, Scales was run ragged by the hosts' frontline. Went into the book for chopping down the lively Ross as Falkirk attempted to break over the half-way line. Was presented with a huge chance to pull a goal back late on but couldn't keep his header from six yards down.
Kieran Tierney - 5: Wasn't as culpable as some of his teammates, with most of Celtic's problems in defence coming down the opposite flank. Saw a side-foot volley go wide off the far post midway through the second half. Gave supporters an injury scare when he fell to the ground in injury time only to quickly get back to his feet.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 4: Handed a rare start by O'Neill but was simply unable to justify his inclusion. The ex-Liverpool, Arsenal and England star made some crucial contributions in Celtic's dramatic title-winning campaign last season but has not made his mark on any match since then.
Callum McGregor - 5: Lost the midfield battle for large parts of the clash and missed a huge chance to get the Hoops back into the game on the hour mark when he blazed one high and wide from inside the area.
Mika Baur - 5: Has been a top performer for the Hoops since his summer arrival but, like the majority of his teammates, was not at the races on Sunday. Watched the last six minutes from the bench after being replaced by Luke McCowan.
Haissem Hassan - 4: Offered next to nothing going forward, and some of his efforts to help his team out of possession was described as 'pathetic' by Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton, who was on co-commentary duty at the game. Picked up a cheap booking late in the first half for a push-and-shove contest with Eames. Fans are still waiting for the World Cup breakout star to have a lift-off performance following his big-money switch from Real Oviedo.
Callum Osmand - 3: Has been lively in recent weeks operating in a left-wing position but was hooked at the interval in favour of James Forrest. The 20-year-old still deserves the benefit of the doubt and is one that supporters certainly have a lot of time for.
Camilo Duran - 3: Saw precious little of the ball throughout the game but could have perhaps made better with a couple of opportunities that did come his way. Was replaced for the final 25 minutes having only touched the ball once following the restart.
Substitutes' Impact
James Forrest (Osmand, 45') - 4: O'Neill turned to the veteran to help try and spark a second-half fightback. The wide man got into some decent positions to tee up his teammates but was ultimately foiled by Bain and the resolute Falkirk defence.
Benjamin Nygren (Oxlade-Chamberlain, 65') - 4: Tried to make things happen in vain for Celtic and was denied by a solid save from the imperious Bain shortly after his arrival.
Kasper Hogh (Duran, 65') - 2: The Dane had to settle for a cameo from the bench and did very little to convince his manager to bring him back in from the start for a prolonged run. That's now 14 appearances in green-and-white since his hat-trick at Kilmarnock in August.
Luke McCowan (Baur, 84') - 2: Introduced as Celtic continued to push hard for a consolation goal that never came. Only two of the former Dundee skipper's appearances this season have come from the start.
Sebastian Tounekti (Hassan, 84') - 2: The Swede has also fallen down the pecking order at Parkhead and has plenty of work to do if he wants to get himself back into the fold. Did provide a couple of decent crosses towards the end that ultimately came to nothing.
