Celtic boss O'Neill open to more fan Q&As after Greenock

Martin O'Neill has said that nothing from the recent fan Q&A he attended with the Celtic board surprised him, and he is open to attending similar events in the future if time allows.

The Parkhead boss joined club chiefs at the Greenock Celtic Supporters Club, where 120 fans questioned the Hoops hierarchy for two hours. Topics discussed included O'Neill's own future, transfer spending and plans, as well as Dermot Desmond.

Board expected the questions

O'Neill, who requested to attend alongside CEO Michael Nicholson, CFO Chris McKay and others, said he expected the questions to be along the lines they were and believes the board would have known what was coming too. He said the board tried to answer honestly, but knows he will ultimately be judged by results this season.

"I don't think anything really surprised me at all," he said. "The questions they were asking, I think the board would have been expecting those questions to be asked and obviously hoping to answer them in the best manner possible and as honestly as they could.

"My job doesn't rely on me going to meetings like this. It all depends on results, it really does and I cannot forget that. That's the point."

Open to future events

O'Neill said he is open to attending similar events in future if time allows. He added: "I wanted to go to it. I didn't know about it until the 11th hour. But yeah, I just wanted to go down to it and essentially experience what the supporters are feeling and see how we can do something about it.

"The questions were straightforward and I think you would know the questions would be. I think they were fair, absolutely and the board as a whole tried to answer them as honestly as they possibly could."

This is the second time O'Neill has gone to a fan Q&A, following a similar event in Cork some months ago during pre-season. He said: "If the time permits, then that's fine. If we've got a busy schedule and they've organised it at a certain time then obviously I wouldn't be able to make it."
