Casemiro's home debut for Inter Miami turned into a nightmare as the former Manchester United midfielder scored an own goal in a 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew.
The 34-year-old Brazilian sent an errant pass to the opposition before sliding the ball past his own goalkeeper as he attempted to cut out a cross. His misfortune allowed Columbus to equalise following Luis Suarez's opening strike.
Inter Miami twice led before late equaliser
Inter Miami regained the lead before halftime when Noah Allen scored in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time. Brais Mendez then secured a share of the spoils for Columbus with a late goal.
Despite his error, Casemiro completed the full 90 minutes for the second consecutive match. His full debut had been a 1-0 win over Montreal, a game overshadowed by a serious injury to new teammate German Berterame.
Move to Miami completes after Man United exit
The former Real Madrid star left Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract came to a close. The Brazil international enjoyed an impressive final term at Old Trafford but had announced his plans to leave at the beginning of the year.
Casemiro featured for his nation at the World Cup before his new club was confirmed following Brazil's last-16 exit. He signed a one-year deal with Inter Miami, with an option to extend his stay until 2029.
Speaking earlier in the week, Casemiro revealed he dreamed of playing alongside MLS star Lionel Messi. The World Cup runner-up came off the bench against Columbus to fulfill his former rival's wish.
"The amount of trouble Messi gave me. of course, I dreamed of playing with him," Casemiro said. "I always wanted to play with the best. I could never stop him, I always needed the help of my teammates."I am very happy to be alongside him now and I want to continue winning titles with him. I want to enjoy being alongside him, help him and make him even greater. He is one of the gods of football, if not the God of football himself, and I want to help.
MLS opens tampering investigation
Casemiro's transfer has also drawn scrutiny from Major League Soccer, which announced it was investigating the move after Inter Miami reached a settlement with LA Galaxy for the rights to sign him.
"The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete," the MLS said. "While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the discovery priority [first rights] to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation."
