Michael Carrick Eyes Marcus Rashford Return to Manchester United Under One Key Condition
Carrick Wants Rashford Back at Man Utd If Made Permanent Boss

Michael Carrick, the interim manager of Manchester United, is reportedly keen to orchestrate a sensational return for Marcus Rashford to Old Trafford next season. However, this potential homecoming hinges on one crucial factor: Carrick must first be appointed as the club's permanent manager.

Carrick's Impressive Interim Stint Fuels Speculation

Since taking over from the sacked Ruben Amorim, Carrick has enjoyed a dream start to his tenure as interim boss. The former United midfielder has overseen two remarkable victories against top-tier rivals Manchester City and Arsenal. This immediate success has inevitably sparked widespread speculation that the club's hierarchy could offer him the permanent role when the season concludes.

According to reports from the Telegraph, should Carrick secure the position on a full-time basis, one of his primary objectives would be to reintegrate Marcus Rashford into the Manchester United squad. This represents a significant shift from the player's recent history at the club.

Rashford's Journey from Outcast to Barcelona Star

Marcus Rashford's relationship with Manchester United deteriorated under previous manager Ruben Amorim, who infamously suggested he would prefer to select the 63-year-old goalkeeping coach over the England international. This led to Rashford's initial loan move to Aston Villa at the end of the 2024/25 season, followed by his current season-long loan at Spanish giants Barcelona.

At Barcelona, Rashford has rediscovered his form, contributing nine goals and twelve assists so far this campaign. The La Liga club holds a £26 million option to make the deal permanent, with strong indications they intend to activate this clause. Despite this, Carrick, who played alongside Rashford during the latter stages of his own career, evidently still believes the forward has a future at his boyhood club.

The Player's Perspective and Tactical Adaptation

However, the same reports indicate that Rashford himself is currently inclined to remain with Barcelona. Speaking after a midweek Champions League goal, the forward discussed adapting to manager Hansi Flick's intense pressing style.

"For me it takes a little bit of learning to get used to because you can't let them rest on the ball. Whoever is closest to the ball always has to put pressure. So it's a little bit different to what I'd done before. But this is the style of defence we play and when it works it's really good," Rashford explained.

Flick has consistently praised Rashford's performances but noted that the final decision on his future will rest with Sporting Director Deco. "Marcus' performances have been really good until now, so we have to manage it, but it's Deco's job to do things for next season," Flick stated.

January Window Quiet for United as Carrick Focuses on Squad

Meanwhile, Manchester United appear set for a quiet end to the January transfer window, with no major signings or key departures anticipated. Carrick also addressed speculation surrounding striker Joshua Zirkzee, expressing his desire for the player to stay.

"Josh is just trying to work to get fit and get around the group. It has been great to have him back training with the group for the first time. That is as far as it goes, for me and for Josh. I am looking forward to working with him," Carrick said, effectively dismissing rumours of an imminent exit.

The situation presents a fascinating subplot for the remainder of the season. Carrick's managerial future, Rashford's permanent club destination, and the potential for a dramatic reunion at Old Trafford all remain delicately poised, dependent on results, negotiations, and key decisions in the months ahead.
