Michael Carrick Eyes Permanent Manchester United Role Amid Keane Criticism
Carrick Targets Permanent Man United Role, Unfazed by Keane

Michael Carrick has made an emphatic declaration of his intent to secure the permanent head coach role at Manchester United, describing the position as the "ultimate role" while asserting that criticism from figures like Roy Keane does not affect him in the slightest.

Strong Start at Old Trafford

The 44-year-old Englishman, who assumed control from Ruben Amorim last month, has enjoyed a highly promising beginning to his tenure at the helm of Manchester United. Under his guidance, the team has secured four victories and one draw from their initial five Premier League matches, significantly revitalising their prospects of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

From Interim to Frontrunner

Originally appointed on an interim basis until the conclusion of the current campaign, Carrick's positive influence and results have propelled him into serious contention for the full-time position. He is now considered the overwhelming favourite to be in the dugout for the club's first fixture of the next season, marking a rapid ascent in his coaching career.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Carrick did not hesitate to express his desire to remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future. "For me, it's the ultimate role," he stated. "I'm really enjoying it, I love what I'm doing. I'm fortunate. I feel privileged to be in the position I am, but it's not the fact that I believe I can do it and I'm here to do it."

He elaborated on his connection to the club, saying, "I said it when I came in - there's the sentimental side of that... of understanding the role and coming through the club and being here and loving the club and being a supporter and all that side of it is one thing. But, actually, I'm here to do a job now and to make a good team and be successful."

Dismissing External Criticism

Carrick's appointment initially faced scepticism from certain quarters, most notably from former teammate Roy Keane. Keane had previously labelled the club's decision-making as a "circus act" and questioned the credentials of Carrick's backroom staff, including Jonny Evans.

Keane remarked, "He's on the beach two weeks ago Jonny Evans. Jonny Evans leaves Man United four or five weeks ago as a loans manager and then Darren Fletcher gives him a job, strangely enough gives him a job. He has two games, Fletch goes and Carrick gives him a job, great isn't it. We should all go to Barbados for a week."

Personal Attacks and Carrick's Response

In a more personal attack, Keane had also described Carrick's wife, Lisa Roughead, as a "big mouth" after she criticised the Irishman for his harsh comments regarding her husband's performance in a 2014 Champions League match. Keane commented on The Overlap, "His wife can always come in [if Carrick doesn't do well], cause she's got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She's probably doing the team talk."

However, Carrick remains entirely unfazed by such criticism. He asserted, "It doesn't bother me one bit. Genuinely, it doesn't. I'm not going to really fall out with anyone over that. I think it's a respect thing as much as anything and I'll give and take that."

He added a broader perspective, noting, "I think for younger players in general it's something we need to help them with and look after them. It's a different world now to when, say, I was coming through, but we do that and we look after them."

Focus on Long-Term Success

Carrick emphasised his commitment to the club's future, regardless of the duration of his tenure. "I don't decide how long that's going to be but I love being here and while I'm here, I'll give everything I can. And I always plan for the long-term future for the benefit of the football club. That's how I believe it should be," he concluded.

With his impressive start and clear ambition, Michael Carrick has firmly staked his claim to lead Manchester United on a permanent basis, demonstrating resilience in the face of external scrutiny and a steadfast focus on achieving success at one of football's most prestigious institutions.
