Manchester United are preparing for potential managerial change as Michael Carrick's position comes under renewed scrutiny following a 4-1 defeat to Como on Wednesday. The result has intensified pressure on Carrick ahead of Sunday's home clash with Bournemouth.
Dressing room unrest has added to the difficulties, with Bruno Fernandes publicly criticising the manager's tactics against Como. Carrick responded by questioning the team's work-rate. Club chiefs are considering a change to salvage a season that is threatening to unravel, with Carrick expected to remain in charge for the Bournemouth fixture.
Hurzeler decision made
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler would reportedly turn down an approach from United. The 33-year-old German coach has impressed with the Seagulls, who sit third in the Premier League and are chasing Champions League football.
Brighton are not concerned about losing their head coach, who does not have a release clause, according to The Sun. Hurzeler is said to be uninterested in the United job at this time, though he would be more open to approaches from clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal, with such moves potentially years away.
Nagelsmann shows his hand
United would reportedly consider Julian Nagelsmann if Carrick is sacked. The former Bayern Munich boss was in contention for the job in the summer before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis.
Nagelsmann resigned after Germany's last 32 exit at the World Cup and is now available for a return to club management. According to The Telegraph, the 39-year-old 'would listen' to an approach from United and is regarded as a leading candidate. He has previously interested Chelsea and Tottenham, while former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, also out of work, remains another strong candidate. Antonio Conte is believed to be interested in reviving United, though doubts persist over whether his strong personality would suit the club.
