Storm Austen has arrived in the UK, bringing damaging winds and heavy downpours to Wales on Friday, with two yellow weather warnings for wind in force and a second named storm expected over the weekend.
The first yellow warning came into force at 10pm on Thursday, covering the west coast and the entirety of the south of Wales. A second alert began at 10am on Friday, October 23, extending across the whole of south Wales and parts of mid Wales for most of the day. Gusts of up to 50-70mph are expected widely.
Warnings and Affected Areas
The Met Office has warned that "injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible" and that disruption "could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties".
The areas covered by the first warning include Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan.
Second Storm on the Way
Elsewhere in the UK, an amber warning for wind covers Cornwall, Devon and the Isles of Scilly, in effect from 1am until 10am on Friday.
While Storm Austen moves away late on Friday, the second named storm of the season, Storm Boelo, is set to move in late on Saturday, bringing "impactful winds" to the UK.
