Carrick stays as Man United boss after Bournemouth loss
Carrick remains Man United boss ahead of Chelsea trip

Michael Carrick remains Manchester United manager, at least for now, after the club decided against sacking him following Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. The loss leaves United without a win in eight games and 16th in the Premier League table.

Carrick's Future Decided After Bournemouth Defeat

Carrick appeared to bid farewell to the Old Trafford crowd after the Bournemouth loss, with supporters continuing to sing his name. The defeat came days after a 4-1 loss in Como, and the squad has again been accused of looking disinterested.

Expectation had been that Carrick would be dismissed on Monday, with an announcement anticipated when he arrived at Carrington. That did not happen, and it is now understood he will lead United at Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime.

Board Backs Carrick Despite Pressure

The Old Trafford hierarchy had been discussing their next move, with alternative managers being considered, but there is a willingness to stick with the current setup. Carrick retains the fans' backing, and the leadership structure has hired and fired too many managers to be considered competent.

With the current status quo expected to remain at Stamford Bridge, attention turns to what Carrick can do to improve his chances of turning things around.

Youth and Formation Changes Considered

Carrick is not expected to simply field the U21s, though one of the most exciting players on Sunday was homegrown talent Shea Lacey, who came on in the second half. His desire, speed and willingness to push forward were a bright spark, and those with the club in their blood tend to find an extra percent or two.

Turning to individuals with limited first-team exposure could be an option. Leny Yoro filled in at right-back on Sunday and was exposed, while the team has often played without a genuine centre forward. Injuries have contributed, but Carrick could roll the dice with players learning those positions, even if their careers are just starting out.

Star Player Decisions and Midfield Changes

Carrick chose to retain Lisandro Martinez in his starting side after his outburst, but Bruno Fernandes' rant was targeted at the United manager. As a result, Fernandes was dropped to the bench at the weekend and remained there on Sunday even when United needed a spark.

The decision for Carrick is whether to stick by his principles or bring back his best player, even if he is underperforming. There is a genuine possibility this could be his last game if the result goes against him, and questions will be asked about whether Fernandes will dig deep for him.

Carrick has tried Kobbie Mainoo, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba in a variety of midfield setups, sometimes with two behind Fernandes and sometimes in a three. None have worked, so with the board ready to strike, the suggestion is to give himself a chance, whether that involves Mason Mount playing more centrally or turning to one of the Fletchers, because the current status quo is not working.
