Michael Carrick has intensified calls to become Manchester United's permanent manager, describing the role as 'the ultimate' in football. Currently in charge until the end of the season after replacing Ruben Amorim, Carrick has guided the club to four consecutive wins, including victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.
The 44-year-old former midfielder, who previously managed Middlesbrough in the Championship, has transformed United's fortunes. When asked about his future, Carrick stated: 'It's the ultimate role. I'm really enjoying it, I love what I'm doing. I'm fortunate. I feel privileged to be in the position I am.'
However, Carrick acknowledged that the decision on his long-term tenure rests with the club hierarchy. 'I don't decide how long that's going to be, but I love being here and while I'm here, I'll give everything I can,' he added.
United's board had been pursuing a long-term appointment in the summer, with candidates such as Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva linked. Yet Carrick's impressive start has made him the bookmakers' favourite to lead the team next season, especially if he secures a top-four finish.
Carrick's only prior top-flight managerial experience came during a brief caretaker spell after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking. His current stint has seen United climb the table, leaving the club with a significant decision to make.
