Carrick 'hurt' by Old Trafford boos after Tottenham draw

Michael Carrick admitted he was 'hurt' by boos from the Old Trafford faithful following Manchester United's draw at home to winless Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils boss is under mounting pressure after his side surrendered a lead against 10 men for a second consecutive home match.

United capitulate against 10 men again

United looked out of sorts in the first half and ought to have gone into the break trailing their north London visitors. However, the tide turned in the second half, with United taking the lead after a finish from Bryan Mbeumo inside the penalty area.

All hope of a comeback for Spurs looked lost when Rodrigo Bentancur saw red for a headbutt on Luke Shaw. But poor defending from Lisandro Martinez allowed Dominic Solanke to squeeze home an unlikely equaliser in added time, leaving Carrick once again scratching his head.

Manager's reaction

During his post-match debrief, the United boss told BBC Sport: "It's not nice, it hurts a lot because I care about this club. But I understand the disappointment, the reality is what it is, we need to get back to winning games."

The result is the latest blow for Carrick since he was appointed on a permanent basis during the summer, with United having now won just one of their opening six in the Premier League. Draws against Everton, Fulham and now Spurs were made worse by defeats to Hull City and rivals Manchester City.

Upcoming fixtures

Things aren't expected to get much easier for Carrick and United, given their mid-week assignment sees them travel to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. After a meeting with Diego Simeone's side, United face Leeds United away in the Premier League, before another Champions League outing, this time a trip to northern Italy to play Cesc Fabregas' Como.
