Benjamin Sesko scored the only goal in Manchester United's win over Everton, celebrating with an angry, air-punching display in front of the travelling supporters. The celebration was seen as a message to manager Michael Carrick, as the £74m striker continues to push for a starting place after another impactful substitute appearance.
Carrick's United have now won five of six games under his tenure, with Sesko proving to be an impact substitute of the highest order. However, the manager's preference for a settled lineup meant Sesko again started on the bench, with Thierno Barry leading the line alone in a first half devoid of serious chances.
Everton manager David Moyes deployed an unconventional full-back pairing, with James Garner at right-back and Jarrad Branthwaite on the left. Despite the odd setup, the first half remained mediocre, and Carrick resisted making a change until after the hour mark, when he called on Sesko.
Everton's most inventive player, Iliman Ndiaye, created a rare opportunity for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but the home side's commitment to attack left them exposed. A superb raking pass from Matheus Cunha found Bryan Mbeumo, who played a simple but accomplished assist for Sesko to slot home the winner.
Carrick's approach – round pegs, round holes, minimal rotation – has brought stability, but the selection headache remains. With a comfortable schedule, he could field the same eleven for every remaining match, but Sesko's form from the bench makes a strong case for promotion to the starting lineup.
